For the first time ever, Milken’s literary magazine is holding a competition for the best submission, with hopes of gaining a larger range and overall quantity of pieces.

The Literary Magazine started as an elective but has transformed into a school-wide publication supported by Milken’s Creative Writing Program. The magazine features work that students have either created throughout the year, or solely for the purpose of the magazine.

The magazine staff is sponsoring a contest that will elect two winners – one for best poem and one for best short fiction. After reviewing all submissions, due by the December 17 deadline, the staff will vote on the poem and short fiction they deem best. The two winners will be awarded with a prize of 75 dollars each and a feature in the 2011 Literary Magazine.

With more staff members than in previous years and the ability to publish in full color, this year’s magazine hopes to exceed those of past years.

“Instead of the usual rush during the last few months of the school year, we decided to work towards a goal of really sorting out the most impressive and well-written works of some of the best writers in the school. I am excited for how the literary magazine will turn out,” Ariel Schnitzer ’11, senior editor of the magazine, said.

This compilation of talent gives Milken a public voice and allows each student to perfect his or her work and see its polished outcome in a publication to be enjoyed by the community.

The 2011 edition of the magazine is accepting submissions until December 17. Please submit your best fiction, poetry, art, or creative non-fiction pieces for review, and who knows? Maybe you will be one of the lucky winners.
